Japan Coast Guard officials have launched an investigation into a collision between a Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) destroyer and a commercial vessel, as the possibility emerges that the container vessel may have veered into the path of the destroyer.

On Oct. 28, Coast Guard officials examined the 5,200-ton destroyer Kurama and the 7,401-ton commercial vessel Carina Star on suspicion of professional negligence and dangerous sailing.

An official representing the commercial container vessel explained that the vessel collided with the destroyer on Oct. 27 after turning to the left to pass another ship traveling in the same direction. Six of the 297 crewmembers of the Kurama were injured, an investigation by the 7th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters found.
