A record 30 cosplay lovers from 15 countries participated in the Cosplay Championship held on Aug. 2 in the city of Nagoya as part of the World Cosplay Summit 2009.

The Japanese team was voted world champions for the first time since the event's inauguration in 2003, for their samurai warrior costumes from the video game series "Sengoku Basara" and their spectacular swordfight performance. The runner up was the Spanish team, dressed as characters from the "Candy Candy" series.

Teams were given three minutes each to present their costumes, and were judged on their expression, creativity, entertainment and faithfulness to the original story.

"It was a very close competition," said cartoonist Go Nagai, a guest judge. "I felt that manga culture is becoming increasingly widespread, and I hope manga and anime will help to bring the world together."
