Swans are pictured in the early morning glow on Lake Hyo in the Niigata Prefecture city of Agano, which is a designated wetland under the Ramsar Convention. This year, swans were first spotted on the lake on Oct .1, a record early arrival since statistics were first kept in 1950, according to the administration office of the lake. After passing winter on the lake, schools of swans, including roughly 5,300 currently resting there, are expected to travel north toward Siberia in late February. (Mainichi)
