Ishikawa 1 stroke back at Taiheiyo Masters
GOTEMBA, Shizuoka (AP) -- Japanese teenager Ryo Ishikawa has shot a 4-under 68 to finish one stroke off the lead after the first round of the Taiheiyo Masters.
The 18-year-old made three straight birdies from No. 14 to move into the lead, but bogeyed the final hole to finish one stroke behind leaders Kenichi Kuboya, Tomohiro Kondo and Shigeru Nonaka.
Ishikawa, who is bidding for his fifth win of the season, teed off from the par-4 10th Thursday and got off to a promising start with an eagle on the par-5 11th at the Taiheiyo Club.
With a purse of $1.6 million, the Taiheiyo Masters is one of the richest events on the Japanese tour.
