Cosmetics shopping website comes under cyberattacks

FUKUOKA (Kyodo) -- The online shopping site of a Fukuoka-based cosmetics wholesaler and retailer has come under cyberattack, leading to the outflow of information, including credit card numbers, on its 1,493 clients, police and company sources said Friday.

Vernal Co., which is headquartered in Fukuoka's Hakata Ward, has filed a complaint with local police, saying it has confirmed unauthorized use of some credit card data, they said.

The cards' expiry dates and shipping addresses of products were stolen as well as the clients' names and card numbers, but the extent of damage is yet to be confirmed, the company said.

After a credit card operator told the company on Nov. 9, 2011, that its clients' credit card data might have been wrongfully used, Vernal investigated and found that its database was manipulated through several authorized accesses to its website from Japan, the United States and Vietnam between Oct. 14 and Nov. 10 last year.

It filed its complaint Jan. 6 with the Fukuoka prefectural police, and submitted a report Jan. 16 on the leak of personal data to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Vernal said it would make best efforts to tighten controls on personal information and prevent a recurrence of such a data leakage.
