Two arrested over illegal baseball gambling hit with fresh charges

WAKAYAMA -- Two suspects under arrest over illegal baseball gambling, including the younger brother of well known singer Fuyumi Sakamoto, have been hit with new arrest warrants for their involvement in another baseball gambling case, police said.

Seiji Morita, 57, a high-ranking member of a gang affiliated with the Yamaguchi-gumi yakuza group and a resident of the Kagawa Prefecture town of Utazu, and Seiji Sakamoto, 40, a resident of the Wakayama Prefecture town of Kamitonda, stand accused of opening a place of gambling for the purpose of profit.

Morita and Sakamoto are suspected of accepting bets on Japanese professional baseball games at 10,000 yen for each wager between July and September this year. The two were arrested on the same charges on Oct. 18, but denied the allegations, according to police.

Sakamoto is the younger brother of enka singer Fuyumi Sakamoto, 42.
