Trawler capsized by haul of giant jellyfish

CHOSHI, Chiba -- A small fishing vessel capsized off a lighthouse here on Friday morning, apparently under the weight of giant jellyfish tangled in its net, local coast guard officials said.

The 9.85-ton trawler, the Daisan Shinsho-maru, reportedly capsized off Inubozaki Lighthouse in Choshi at around 9 a.m., after losing balance while pulling in a net tangled with a large number of Nomura's jellyfish, which can weigh up to 200 kilograms each.

The captain Takashi Otsuka, 57, and two other crew members -- Yoshimatsu Nakauchi, 62, and Noboru Suzuki, 69 -- were thrown into the sea, but rescued by a fellow vessel, according to the Choshi Coast Guard Office. At the time of the accident, the weather was reportedly clear and the sea was calm.
